Clinical trials funding

Helpful resources and recommended websites to secure funding for your clinical trial.

Funding at a glance in Australia

The National Health Medical Research Council Fund is the largest single source of direct government funding for clinical trials in Australia. It provides around A$100 million in funding annually through a wide range of programs.

Clinical trials in Australia contributed approximately $1.6 billion to the Australian economy in 2022, representing approximately 22% of total spending on health research in Australia (MPTConnect Australia’s Clinical Trial Sector report, June 2024).

What stage in the clinical trial process should funding be considered?

Funding should be considered at the very beginning of the clinical trial process, during the planning and design stage. Securing funding early is crucial because it influences every subsequent phase of the trial.

Sources of funding for clinical trials

In Australia, the national Clinical Trials Activity initiative will provide $750 million over 10 years from 2024–25 to help Australian researchers and patients test new treatments through national and international clinical trials. It will also support research on rare cancers, rare diseases and unmet needs.

The initiative is funded by the Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF) and administered by National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC).
